Dancing Spades
The Spadefish gets his name from his similar shape. As most exotics they are equipped with a small mouth with tooth cutting jaws. Typically found around reefs and pilings larger Spades school over offshore reefs. Best way to catch one is to chum with little pieces of cutbait.

As the fish begin to feed freeline a small hooked bait making it look like the chum. You would be impressed with aggressive strike and battle that results from this bait and switch technique. This fish was caught off the Sarasota reefs in July by Alex Thornton.

Fast Break
Spanish Mackerel can be caught at anchor, drifting, or by a method called running and gunning. These are some of the fastest fish that inhabit the ocean. A popular way to locate them is by searching for Terns dipping down to the surface. As the mackerel drive the baitfish up to the surface, the terns dip down to pick up the leftovers. This painting was created for Andrew Wimpfhiemer after a frenzed day of fishing the blitzes off of Lido beach.
